If you can, you should meet up with a local event planner and shadow him or her to make sure this is what you want to do. Event planning is a very large field - it covers corporate meeting planners all the way to individual wedding planners. There are many professional organizations for the event planning field that also would give you insights - ISES, NACE, ABC.
