I have planned a few friends birthday parties and baby showers but has not charged them. I am getting more and more business every month and I have no clue how I should charge for my services! I do a lot for a starting off event planner. I know I can’t do all my events for free because then I’ll never make money from the business.

Are you just spending time organising ? In which case charge clients and hourly rate, say $10-$20 an hour times the amount of hours you work on the event. So, an event which took you 5 hours to plan would cost $10 x 5= $50.

If your also supplying event materials, then you need to charge both an hourly rate for organising PLUS the cost of the item * a profit margin (say 15%), e.g. is you supply $100 of goods, you need to charge $100 + 15% = $115 PLUS the hourly rate charge, as above.

Tourism, Convention and Event Management would be appropriate. See example below. Consider working for the Disney College program as an intern, even if you work in food service rather than event management it will be good experience.

Some community colleges may have event planning courses; however this is a brutal business, and with out any experience you are almost guaranteed to fail. The best advice I can give is to take the courses and try & work for someone else first. This career is all about your skills & who you know as vendors and suppliers. The only way you will get to know those contacts is to work with someone first.
