I have been a venue manager and now am without a venue. I am thinking about planning events independently. I was wondering if the planner charges the client of if they just take a commission from the various vendors. Any insights? Thanks!
I believe they charge the client a fee. They can either set it up as a cost-based fee (ie 10% of the budget) or as a flat rate fee. They may also do a combo of a 10% fee with a minimum of say $1000 or something.
Most professional services like that are cost-based fees.
Here’s a brief description of an Event Planner:
When you are a meeting and convention planner, you organize events for groups of people. For example: weddings, birthdays, meetings, business parties, and group events.
in my country, an event planner gets to meet and greet and wine and dine, or so they think, with all the local celebrities. so i think that if you are young and want to be on the A List, without having the talent to be an entertainer or the brains and backup to be a politician, etc, that is the profession to be in.
Please can anyone suggest anything? Im doing a course on becoming an Event manager and the above question is on an assignment paper……i have some ideas but they seem quite obvious! If anyone has used an Event planner in the past, please share your experience as it would be very helpful!!!
Thank you!!!!
Know what the clients/guests want. Location, location, location.
i am doing a school report and i can not find teh mathematical courses required for being an event planner. if you know the courses or just types of math needed that would be great.
idk but take it into concideration that you need to be good at estimating, multiplacation/devision, geometry (maybe), and addition withBIG NUMBERS
I’m going to college to be an event planner but im not sure what i would take as my major. Does anybody know what my major would be?
Your major will be Business. Hospitality will be a minor emphasis. The Business major will require general education in english, literature, speech, history, science, economics, accounting, business management, and math. You can plot out your courses and merge the hospitality emphasis with a lot of the general ed requirements and make one class fit for both requirements. Take a lot of the hotel management classes, too.

I plan on studying for my associates in "Hotel and Restaurant Management," then to switch my focus to a bachelor degree in "Travel and Tourism Operations." Is this the right field to study to become an Event planner (for coorporations or other companies)? If not, what is a good program to study?
David,
It seems to me that you have chosen a combination of programs that will guide you on a path to the hospitality industry. There are countless opportunities to work in event related roles within these industries. And if you study travel management, there will be corporate jobs in the meetings department for you (many companies hire individuals to work in travel management to manage airline, hotel and other contracts).
However, if you want to work in a corporate environment where you will be responsible for planning and executing events, many opportunities exist within the business areas of companies. Therefore, if you want to study marketing, public relations, advertising and business management, those programs may be stronger.
In the end, I suggest you follow a path of studying the types of courses you enjoy most. Good luck.

Unfortunately, event planning is not a licesned profession so just about anyone can do it. When your in school, some things that will help you further pursue a career in this field would be:
1) Join PRSSA.
2) Get a job working with a catering company. Try to work yourself up to a lead or manager because this will give you the skills needed to plan a food budget and also work with caterers.
3) Find out which organization on your campus plans the student activities and join. This will give you great experience.
4) Do as many internships as you can. You will get to workin the field and hopefuly narrow down what type of events you wish to plan or work in.
Once you get a few years experience in the field, you can become a Certified Meeting Planner by taking a test. If you are working with convention centers or large venues, this is a highly viewed certification. It can be difficult to get and also expensive if you have to take the test more than once but it is worth it.
The event field is hectic and hard. The hours are irregular and your job is often thankless. There are always problems you wouldn’t ever think of. It is also the best job in the entire world.
I’ve just decided to become an event planner, but I’m not too familiar with this field.
What college classes are available in helping me to become an event planner?
What other activities (locally, in high high school, etc.) are available for me to learn some skills that I need.
If there are any event planners out there, please give me some advice.
Thank you for your time.
Event planning is usually done by overweight women who work out of their trailer park home.
Since they’re willing to do it for almost free (or in return for a dozen chicken legs), it’s difficult to compete with them and make a living.
Choose something else to do with your life. Event Planning is not a realistic career choice.
